Honiton Fine Art : 19th Century Oil Paintings

A very large port scene, painted in oils by Bough, Samuel (1822 -1878) and Sheffield, George (1839 - 1892). George Sheffield was born in Wigaton. He was noted for his marine and landscape paintings. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, UK from 1872 onwards. His work is held in museums in Manchester, UK and Montreal, Canada.

Painting is of the Port of Liverpool, UK.

This good landscape bears the following inscription on the back of the canvas (now covered) "Gypsy encampment at Croxton, Yarborough County, Lincs 1840." It was commissioned by an aristocratic family.

A pleasant nineteenth-century signed oil painting of dogs in a stable by Armfield, George (1840 - 1875). Armfield was a London painter noted for his paintings of dogs, particularly terriers. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London between 1840 and 1862. This particular painting is signed and dated 1840, considered his best period.

The canvas is 17ins x 21ins, the frame size is 25ins x 28.5ins. In its original gold-leaf frame.

A fine painting of a shore scene by Holland, John; a Nottingham painter of landscapes and coastal views. Works by him are held at the Nottingham Art Gallery. During his lifetime he exhibited at Suffolk Street (1831 - 1879) and at the British Institute (1865 - 1866).

The painting is oil on canvas. It is signed by the artist bottom left.

A fine animal painting attributed to Corbould, Aster R.A. He painted rustic genre and horses and exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1850-1874.

This oil painting is painted on panel and is in it's original oak frame.
